About

Artist’s Statement

My painting examines the natural world. Using plants nurtured in my own garden, I portray moments that can be anthropomorphized to mirror or illuminate a human experience.

The process is as much about spending time observing plants and wildlife as making a painting. As I work in the garden and observe its daily changes, I’m waiting to capture the moment when a composition tells a story. The flowers, leaves, and insects can stand in for characters in a scene which can help us start to relate to a world many don’t see. These creatures are not us, but if we can see ourselves in them, perhaps we’ll see them and ourselves differently.

Along with my own enjoyment spending time in this space, I seek to engage the viewer and elicit a sense of curiosity and wonder. By directing attention to my interpretation of the beauty and depth of the life around us, I hope to generate a connection that extends to viewers’ own interactions in their gardens, parks, and the natural world beyond.
